Like other global phenomena, migration has been shaped by historical geopolitical conflicts. In the Middle East and North African (MENA) region, a longstanding hotspot of political and armed tensions, the repercussions extend far beyond national borders, significantly impacting the lives of millions of people. 

In recent years, the MENA region has faced not only the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic but also the enduring consequences the ongoing political tensions and humanitarian crises. The conflicts in Gaza and Sudan have intensified, while tensions and insecurity persist in Syria, Yemen, and Iraq, contributing to the region’s status as a key point of origin, transit, and destination for diverse groups of migrants.

La principal causa de mort per càncer es deu al desenvolupament de metàstasi, el procés pel qual el tumor es dissemina a altres òrgans i contra el qual hi continua havent poques opcions de tractament. Els últims anys hi ha grans avenços en la recerca, amb resultats que canvien el concepte de metàstasi i que fan possibles noves formes de combatre-la, algunes ja en fase d’assaig clínic. Ho van explicar experts mundials en aquest camp en el congrés CNIO-Caixa Research Frontiers Meeting: Metàstasi, celebrat al Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO) del 6 al 8 de novembre.

Segons l’últim comunicat de la Organització Mundial de la Salut, 39 milions de persones al món viuen amb VIH i l’any passat hi va haver 1,3 milions de noves infeccions. IrsiCaixa treballa en diferents estratègies de cura contra el virus i, moltes d’elles, s’inspiren en casos singulars d’infecció pel VIH. Aquests casos són, entre d’altres, els “controladors d’elit excepcionals”, que no tenen virus a la sang ni desenvolupen la malaltia tot i no prendre tractament antiretroviral; els “virèmics no progressors”, en els qui, en absència de tractament, la malaltia evoluciona lentament malgrat tenir altes quantitats de virus a la sang; o els que s’han curat del VIH després de rebre un transplantament de cèl·lules mare.

Avui presentem els 33 projectes seleccionats en la convocatòria CaixaResearch d’Investigació en Salut 2023 que es duran a terme en centres d’investigació, hospitals i universitats d’Espanya i Portugal.

La convocatòria té com a objectiu impulsar la recerca biomèdica d’excel·lència amb gran impacte social en investigació bàsica, clínica i translacional.

Els projectes premiats, seleccionats entre 493 propostes, rebran una ajuda de fins a 500.000 euros o 1.000.000 d’euros, segons es portin a terme de forma individual o en consorcis compostos per entre 2 i 5 organitzacions.

La seva investigació es centrarà en diferents àmbits: 8 investigaran en malalties infeccioses, 7 en neurociències, 7 en malalties cardiovasculars i metabòliques relacionades,

By the end of this September, we held the second-ever CaixaResearch Health Meeting at the gardens of Cap Roig, a unique spot in the Mediterranean and an emblematic location on the Costa Brava, Spain. This edition brought together the project leaders and principal investigators from the 25 projects selected in the 2019 CaixaResearch Health Call. 

During the two-day gathering, especially designed to promote scientific exchange and create new opportunities for collaboration, participants had the opportunity to engage in multidisciplinary discussions and gain insights from other projects. This year’s edition brought together over forty researchers from Spain and Portugal, who explored pressing topics related to the present and future of health research and innovation.
