In today&#8217;s society, with our typically sedentary lives and high-calorie diets, we accumulate fat very quickly and its excess in our bodies is directly related to <strong>obesity and other metabolic health problems<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">When we ingest excess calories, cells called <strong>adipocytes are responsible for storing them as fat<\/strong>. This <strong>prevents fat from being deposited in other tissues and organs<\/strong> such as the liver or the walls of blood vessels, which would be harmful. Until now, it was not fully understood how adipocytes managed to store this fat without becoming overwhelmed but, recently, a team from the <\/span><strong><i>Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnic.es\/en\/noticias\/cnic-scientists-discover-key-mechanism-fat-cells-protects-body-against-energetic-excess\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">CNIC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">), led by the researcher from the CaixaResearch network <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-health-call-2020-project-atherosclerosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Miguel \u00c1ngel del Pozo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, has made a breakthrough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Their study, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-024-54224-y\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Nature Communications<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, describes the mechanism by which adipocytes expand safely. They do so thanks to caveolae, <strong>small folds in the cell membrane<\/strong> that act as sensors and transducers of the tension generated as a result of fat accumulating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cWhen the adipocyte fills with fat, the caveolae flatten out, helping it to grow and store a lot more lipids without breaking\u201d explains del Pozo. As a result, they <strong>prevent fat from being released into the body<\/strong>, which would lead to inflammation and metabolic alterations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This study\u2019s findings represent a significant breakthrough in our understanding of metabolic diseases and open the door to the <strong>development of new therapeutic strategies<\/strong> to combat disorders related to chronic excess energy, such as being overweight or obese, lipodystrophy and metabolic syndrome.
