Similarly, the image from this scientific study first dwells in <\/span><b>the shadow of tumour spheres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> to, <\/span><b>through the impact of blue light, activate a <\/b><b>photosensitiser drug<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> that goes on to act on these resistant cells and unfold the true \u2018scientific work\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">We&#8217;ve adopted two approaches to examine this intersection of perspectives between art and science in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/acbcct\/article\/21\/4\/710\/5137684\/Photocaged-Chloroquine-Derivatives-for-the-Light\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">this innovative photopharmacological study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. On the one hand is <\/span><b>the artistic vision of <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/becarios.fundacionlacaixa.org\/en\/cristina-gomez-barrio-B000648?nav=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Cristina G\u00f3mez Barrio<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, who undertook her postgraduate studies in Berlin thanks to a fellowship from \u201cla Caixa\u201d Foundation. She&#8217;s an independent artist, a lecturer at the Stuttgart State Academy of Fine Arts (ABK Stuttgart) and co-founder of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Discoteca Flaming Star <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">collective in Berlin where, since 1998, she&#8217;s been working with an approach she calls &#8216;collective constellations&#8217;, in a \u201cconstant dialogue with other artists\u201d. Up to the end of the 19th century, Redon produced several portfolios of lithographs and the strength, density and texture of the blacks \u2013 this image has inevitably led me to think of them. It&#8217;s striking how Redon was able to analyse and express through <\/span><b>the texture of the powder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, how he achieves something so volatile that&#8217;s <\/span><b>on the verge of losing its form yet so dense and profound at the same time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Like the <\/span><b>dark light radiated by something that existed a long time ago <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">and continues to emit energy. Or like a mark on the skin, from <\/span><b>something that no longer exists.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">I\u2019d call it <\/span><b>\u2018Lunar Fossil\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">if I had to give it a name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Let\u2019s continue with the researchers.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<h4><b><i>Laia, from a scientific perspective, what do these clusters represent?<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>Laia (L): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In the image we see <\/span><b>three-dimensional clusters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, known as spheres, <\/span><b>of cancer cells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Tumour stem cells, which are <\/span><b>particularly resistant to treatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, proliferate under such conditions, allowing us to study whether our molecules are capable of eliminating them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b><i>Amadeu, what kind of molecules have you developed?\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>Amadeu (A): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">We&#8217;ve developed <\/span><b>molecules that inhibit a cellular process called <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/autophagy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>autophagy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, but with a very special characteristic: <\/span><b>they&#8217;re only activated when exposed to blue light<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. In the absence of light, the molecules remain inactive while, after a few seconds of exposure to light, <\/span><b>they take on their anti-tumour activity. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This enables us to very precisely control when and where they act, limiting their effect to the desired location.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Furthermore, we&#8217;ve demonstrated that these molecules <\/span><b>can eliminate the resistant tumour stem cells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, and they can be activated by blue light directly <\/span><b>within a tumour <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">in mouse models. However, it&#8217;s very difficult to develop drugs that selectively eliminate them because <\/span><b>they have a lot of characteristics in common with healthy stem cells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. We already know that blocking autophagy can eliminate these resistant cells but the <\/span><b>currently available inhibitors also affect healthy tissue <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">and can cause side effects. <\/span><b>Our strategy involves using light to activate the drug solely within the tumour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, so that its action is localised and can increase the treatment\u2019s efficacy whilst reducing toxicity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b><i>What impact do you think this discovery will have on society?<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>L: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Our findings propose a new strategy for eliminating the most resistant tumour cells. In the future, this type of treatment could <\/span><b>be combined with conventional chemotherapy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">to increase the chances of completely eliminating the tumour and reducing the risk of relapse. However, it&#8217;s important to emphasise that the research is still at a very early stage and <\/span><b>these molecules <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">still need <\/span><b>to be optimised and their efficacy and safety studied <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">before they can be put into clinical practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Furthermore, this work demonstrates the <\/span><b>huge potential of photopharmacology <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">to precisely control the action of drugs. In the future, this approach could lead to <\/span><b>safer, more selective and more effective treatments <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">for patients with various diseases, and cancer in particular.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">We&#8217;re currently applying the same approach to the development of light-activated drugs aimed at <\/span><b>other therapeutic targets in cancer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. We&#8217;re also designing new molecules that can <\/span><b>be activated by green and red light<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, whose greater ability to penetrate tissue would make them easier to use in the case of deeper tumours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b><i>As usual, we\u2019d like to explore how science and art, or creativity, intertwine, based on the artistic perspectives within our community. Cristina, what do you think is the connection between the two?<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>C: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">I believe that <\/span><b>both science and art seek to understand <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">where we are, what surrounds us, how we connect with all forms of life and existence in our environment\u2026 what has brought us to this point. And both <\/span><b>draw on imagination whilst maintaining a high degree of rigour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. But perhaps we should distinguish between creativity and art, because <\/span><b>not all forms of creativity result in art<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Just as, <\/span><b>in scientific research, not everything is applied science<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Beyond the visual fascination aroused by these spheres of cells, what this study entails is a fundamental breakthrough in the <\/span><b>control and specific nature of cancer therapies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.
