Such <\/span><b>tropical nights<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> have ceased to be a summer anomaly, becoming a symptom of a more far-reaching transformation: climate change is no longer just an environmental phenomenon but also a <\/span><b>public health crisis of the first order<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The figures bear this out. In the summer of 2024 alone, <\/span><b>over 62,700 people died from heat-related causes in Europe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/early-adapt.eu\/research\/mortality-associated-with-fine-particles-from-wildfires-may-be-underestimated-by-93-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">a study by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Nature Medicine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. To analyse this new reality, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cuidatemucho.dkvsalud.es\/hubfs\/Ebooks\/DKV%20-%20Ebook%20observatorio%20calor\/Observatorio_salud_medioambiente_calor.pdf?hsLang=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>the report <\/b><b><i>Extreme Heat, Health at Risk<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, prepared by the institute for the DKV Health and Environment Observatory, confirms an inexorable paradigm shift: <\/span><b>extreme heat <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">is no longer a one-off emergency but a <\/span><b>structural threat.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> To understand the implications of this scenario and how it affects Spain, we spoke to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isglobal.org\/en\/our-team\/-\/profiles\/27910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Elizabeth Diago Navarro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, researcher and coordinator of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isglobal.org\/preparedness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Preparedness Hub (PR<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> at ISGlobal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>From seasonal emergencies to structural risk<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The researcher argues that &#8220;Spain is moving towards a climate in which extreme heat is a recurring and structural condition, beyond the <\/span><b>previous pattern of sporadic heatwaves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;. She warns that the combination of its <\/span><b>Mediterranean location<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, a rapidly <\/span><b>ageing population<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and an economy that&#8217;s highly <\/span><b>dependent on more exposed sectors <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">(tourism, agriculture and construction) places Spain at the <\/span><b>centre of this vulnerability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Traditional civil protection and public health frameworks are proving to be insufficient in the face of increasingly prolonged summer seasons that <\/span><b>narrow the margins for recovery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">: &#8220;heat is a new climatic norm that must be permanently and comprehensively integrated into our healthcare, urban and occupational planning&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13926\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/blog-cambio-climatico-02_Elizabeth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/blog-cambio-climatico-02_Elizabeth.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/blog-cambio-climatico-02_Elizabeth-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/blog-cambio-climatico-02_Elizabeth-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/blog-cambio-climatico-02_Elizabeth-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/blog-cambio-climatico-02_Elizabeth-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Elizabeth Diago Navarro <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>A cumulative strain on the body<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The data from ISGlobal reveal acute chronic strain. <\/span><b>Each additional degree of temperature systematically intensifies the pressure on the healthcare system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, resulting in an <\/span><b>18% increase in overall mortality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> which rises to 25% in people over 65.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">However, the researcher explains that the issue&#8217;s statistical invisibility is delaying the\u00a0 political response. &#8220;Most deaths are recorded as being due to cardiovascular, respiratory or renal causes, not as &#8216;death from heatstroke&#8217;, which results in a <\/span><b>systematic underestimation of the problem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;. Such deaths primarily involve the <\/span><b>exacerbation of pre-existing conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> such as cardiovascular decompensation or renal failure, as well as electrolyte imbalances and conditions caused by drugs that alter the patient&#8217;s capacity to regulate their own temperature&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In addition, there&#8217;s the issue of <\/span><b>mental and reproductive health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among other effects, heat increases the risk of anxiety by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">43% and of depression by 26% for every additional degree, whilst for pregnant women the risk of preterm birth and foetal death also rises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Heat-related inequalities<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The impact of heat stress is strongly influenced by income and gender. The researcher asserts that <\/span><b>&#8220;your postcode can be a more decisive factor for your health than any other clinical factor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. In Madrid, for example, lower-income neighbourhoods record night-time temperatures that are up to 4.1 \u00baC higher due to a lack of vegetation and poorer-quality housing. <\/span><b>This is compounded by the gender-gap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">: during heatwaves, women are 56% more likely to die than men because of post-menopausal physiological factors and greater social isolation, with women over 65 being the subgroup at greatest risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Vulnerability also affects <\/span><b>isolated older people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> who suffer from loneliness, as well as <\/span><b>outdoor workers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. \u201cSeasonal migrant workers and builders face the highest levels of exposure&#8221; explains Elizabeth, making the <\/span><b>heat map a direct reflection of social inequality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>A deficient environment: infrastructures and the workplace<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The researcher&#8217;s assessment as to whether Spain&#8217;s towns and workplaces are prepared for this rise in temperatures is to the point: &#8220;the short answer is &#8216;no&#8217;. 85% of Europe&#8217;s building stock was constructed <\/span><b>without heat-protection criteria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and the annual reconditioning rate is just 1%. Furthermore, Spain is already losing 320 million euros a year because of work-related injuries due to heat stress&#8221;. To reverse this situation, she believes there&#8217;s an urgent need to &#8220;<\/span><b>incorporate heat risk into building regulations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, increase the <\/span><b>tree cover <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">in deprived neighbourhoods to reduce the urban heat island effect, <\/span><b>ensure the effective enforcement of labour regulations in response to warnings <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">from the Spanish meteorological agency (particularly in the most vulnerable sectors) and <\/span><b>treat heat as a permanent structural risk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, explains Elizabeth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>From guidelines to community action<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;The tools are there: well-implemented prevention plans <\/span><b>are reducing heat-related deaths by 25.2%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> in the European towns and cities putting them into practice&#8221; Elizabeth points out. However, although Spain has a National Plan, <\/span><b>its implementation is uneven across territories and there&#8217;s a lack of funding and thorough evaluation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">of its effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Faced with longer summers and an ageing population, <\/span><b>the expert pins her hopes on of society at large.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> &#8220;The success of community initiatives shows that the most effective protection against the heat doesn&#8217;t always come from above but from a local level. We need to <\/span><b>build a culture of collective preparedness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">: knowing who lives alone in your block and where the nearest heat shelter is, having a family plan&#8230; Nevertheless, such a culture can&#8217;t be quickly improvised in July; it&#8217;s built up throughout the year with training, social networks and the belief that every person who&#8217;s well supported is a person who&#8217;s better protected&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The researcher insists there&#8217;s a need for action across the board that engages the whole of society and repeats that &#8220;the tools to reduce heat-related deaths already exist and work.
