That&#8217;s why finding a definitive cure remains one of the greatest challenges facing modern medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Nevertheless, <\/span><b>there are cases that offer a glimmer of hope <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">regarding this goal, namely <\/span><b>patients who&#8217;ve achieved viral remission <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">after undergoing a <\/span><b>stem cell transplant to treat haematological cancer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. To further our knowledge in this area, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icistem.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">international consortium IciStem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, coordinated by IrsiCaixa (a leading research center for research on infections and immunity), has spent <\/span><b>over a decade monitoring 40 people <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">with HIV who&#8217;ve received this kind of transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Thanks to this and other efforts, what in 2009 seemed to be a unique and isolated case, namely that of the so-called <\/span><b>&#8220;Berlin patient&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, is today a scientific reality that&#8217;s becoming more prevalent, as there are now ten people worldwide who&#8217;ve achieved remission from HIV. The <\/span><b>\u201cOslo patient\u201d was the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41564-026-02304-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>latest case published<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, in 2026 in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Nature Microbiology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The IrsiCaixa researchers involved in the study, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irsicaixa.es\/en\/maria-salgado-bernal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Maria Salgado Bernal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irsicaixa.es\/en\/javier-martinez-picado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Javier Mart\u00ednez-Picado<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, who is also the coordinator of IciStem 2.0, explain the case of the \u201cOslo patient\u201d in this News from the Lab.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The patient is a 62-year-old man who received a stem cell transplant from his brother, a donor who also carries the <\/span><b>CCR5\u039432 genetic mutation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. This genetic variation <\/span><b>alters the CCR5 receptor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, which acts as <\/span><b>one of the main &#8220;entry points&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> used by HIV to invade the body. As the patient&#8217;s blood and immune system regenerated with the donor&#8217;s cells, the virus found its \u201centry blocked\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Two years after the transplant, and under strict medical supervision, <\/span><b>the patient&#8217;s antiretroviral treatment was discontinued<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. After four years without medication, <\/span><b>no replication-competent virus has been detected, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">in either the blood or the body tissues. Moreover, his immune response to HIV has progressively declined, confirming the <\/span><b>absence of an active infection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Although this kind of stem cell transplant can&#8217;t be scaled up as a solution for the wider population due to its high complexity, this success story, together with that of the other nine patients and the rest of the consortium&#8217;s patients, <\/span><b>provides crucial data for the scientific roadmap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.
