They promise to ward off not only <\/span><b>cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> but also more everyday complaints such as <\/span><b>tiredness, stress and general malaise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. In recent years, inflammation has moved outside the laboratory to take its place in public discourse as one of the most recurring \u2013 and perhaps most promising \u2013 concepts in the health debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">But what do we really know about inflammation? And, above all, what does it actually mean to say that something is \u2018anti-inflammatory\u2019? What scientific evidence supports these techniques? We spoke to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-health-call-2022-project-diet-early-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Manuela Ferreira<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, a researcher specialising in the impact of diet on the immune system, to understand the current state of scientific research, the myths that are circulating, and how this concept is <\/span><b>transforming both research and society\u2019s perception of health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>A historical definition<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The word \u2018inflammation\u2019 comes from the Latin verb <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">inflammare<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, meaning \u2018to set alight\u2019. \u201cThe word itself is highly illustrative\u201d explains Manuela Ferreira, \u201csince inflammation usually manifests as <\/span><b>heat, redness, swelling and pain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, almost as if the tissue were on fire\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">But, beyond its symptoms, inflammation is essentially a defensive response. \u201cIt&#8217;s triggered when the body detects a threat: an infection, an injury or the presence of cells that need to be controlled or eliminated by the immune system\u201d notes Ferreira.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13782\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13782\" class=\"wp-image-13782\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-04.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-04-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-04-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-04-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-04-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Manuela Ferreira<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">There are two types of response depending on the duration: <\/span><b>acute inflammation and chronic inflammation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. \u201cThe former is a rapid, self-limiting response\u201d explains Ferreira. It&#8217;s caused by wounds, mouth ulcers, infections, etc. \u201cIt appears within minutes or hours of the danger being detected and, once the problem is resolved, gradually subsides\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cChronic inflammation is different\u201d points out Ferreira. \u201cIn some cases it can be <\/span><b>almost silent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, as is the case in certain metabolic conditions (such as obesity or diabetes) or cardiovascular disorders, when there&#8217;s a persistent, low-intensity state that can persist for years without any obvious symptoms being manifested but which, over time, ends up damaging tissues and causing disease. In other situations, however, chronic inflammation is highly symptomatic and clearly affects everyday life, as is the case with inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn\u2019s disease and ulcerative colitis. Furthermore, in some contexts chronic inflammation can also promote the development or progression of certain types of cancer&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>In a contemporary context<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Nutrition is probably one of the fields where the concept of \u2018inflammation\u2019 has gained most traction, albeit not always accompanied by advances in our biological understanding of it. This is logical, since diet is one of the most direct ways in which the environment interacts with our biology and influences our health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cScurvy is a clear example of this phenomenon\u201d explains Ferreira. \u201cIn the past, during maritime expeditions, sailors would develop this serious disease caused by a lack of vitamin C. However, although it had already been observed that citrus fruits could prevent and treat scurvy, this nutritional explanation was ignored for centuries\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Rather than asking whether certain foods directly \u2018cause inflammation\u2019 or \u2018reduce inflammation\u2019, current research is focusing on a more complex question. In their laboratory, Ferreira\u2019s team is studying a specific aspect of this process, namely <\/span><b>the role played by nutrients in the development of the gut\u2019s defences during childhood<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13792\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13792\" class=\"wp-image-13792\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-02.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-02-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-02-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-02-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/blog-inflamacion-02-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13792\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Sample of intestinal tissue preserved in a test tube.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Specifically, we&#8217;ve observed how these cells need to \u2018read\u2019 signals derived from vitamin A, such as retinoic acid, in order to develop correctly and perform their function\u201d, she explains. \u201cIf these signals are not detected, the immune cells fail to establish themselves properly in the gut and, as a result, this tissue may be less able to control infections efficiently\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>On everyone\u2019s lips<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">According to Ferreira, there are two complementary reasons for this rise in popularity of the term &#8216;inflammation&#8217;: on the one hand, the growth in scientific understanding of <\/span><b>the importance of immunology in the body <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">and, on the other, <\/span><b>the power of inflammation as a popular concept<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s a process of great biological importance. However, there&#8217;s a risk that the word becomes so useful that it starts to be used as a catch-all term for any ailment or imbalance\u201d she warns. \u201cAnd subsequently as something that seems to have a quick or even commercial solution\u201d. This oversimplification gives rise to some of the most widespread myths in the field:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inflammation is always bad and must be eliminated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cInflammation is essential for life\u201d, Ferreira points out. \u201cIt enables us to fight infection, repair tissue and respond to damage. The problem isn&#8217;t that it exists but rather its persistence or activation in the wrong context\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Any symptom is a direct sign of inflammation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cSymptoms such as tiredness, digestive disorders or skin irritations may involve inflammatory pathways but not always, nor in the same way. From a scientific point of view, it&#8217;s essential to understand the tissue involved, the trigger and the duration of the process\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inflammation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><b> be resolved with one-off solutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cThere&#8217;s no single food (or superfood), supplement or \u2018detox\u2019 substance that can eliminate inflammation on its own\u201d she states. \u201cDiet does play a role. But what matters is the whole picture, not isolated ingredients\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In Ferreira&#8217;s opinion, this is the main challenge presented by the so-called \u2018Age of Inflammation\u2019 in which we live: <b>preserving the value of a concept that has transformed our understanding of health, but without turning it into a universal explanation for every ailment<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b><\/b><b>Beyond the label<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">If, in ten years\u2019 time, we&#8217;re still talking about inflammation, Ferreira hopes it will be because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we have<\/span> <b>a better grasp of the phenomenon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">and not due to greater concern. \u201cI&#8217;d like us to move towards a stage in which we understand more fully how diet, sleep, exercise, stress, infections, pollution and social conditions shape our immune system\u201d she explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">At a time when social media and artificial intelligence offer immediate explanations for complex phenomena, the researcher believes that \u201cthis can have very positive effects because it makes more people aware of the science, but it can also encourage a superficial understanding of complex phenomena. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to<\/span><b> maintain a critical perspective: not every quick explanation is good, nor every immediate solution effective<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cWe need better questions, rigorous interpretations and research capable of delving deeper into the mechanisms that lie behind biological processes.
