At first glance, both are geometric representations of a fabric, a weave of chromatic patterns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In this instalment of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Snapshot of the Month<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, we&#8217;ll discover how this metaphor is connected through the symbolism of cinema and what the study to which the image belongs has actually revealed. For behind the apparent stillness of this image lies <\/span><b>a cellular \u2018battle\u2019 worthy of a film script<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, with its heroes, its villains and a narrative <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">tempo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">that sets the pace. <\/span><b>In this case the actors are senescent cells, veritable &#8216;zombie cells&#8217;<\/b> <b>that stop dividing but don&#8217;t die<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. This phenomenon represents a double-edged sword in a tumour environment: it&#8217;s beneficial initially because it acts as a brake on the division of damaged cells that would feed the tumour, but in the long term they accumulate and release inflammatory substances, ultimately creating conditions that help the tumour to grow. <\/span><b>A new study has revealed a twist to this plot, however, with the entrance of new players involved in the tumour&#8217;s development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To explore this snapshot taken by the study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adx2988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Science Advances<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and carried out at the Vall d\u2019Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) and the Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB), we combine two perspectives. We have the scientific perspective of the researchers involved in the study in question, members of the HMRIB\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchmar.net\/programesrecerca\/cancer\/en_redireccio_immune.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Immune Redirection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> research group: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-health-call-2022-project-breast-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Joaqu\u00edn Arribas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, Group Leader, Health Research Director and Researcher; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/becarios.fundacionlacaixa.org\/en\/web\/guest\/fellows\/pau-garcia-baucells-B005771\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Pau Garcia Baucells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, a member of \u201dla Caixa\u201d Foundation\u2019s fellowship community and a PhD student in cancer immunotherapy; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/marta-lalinde-guti%C3%A9rrez-ba440b116\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Marta Lalinde<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, a Postdoctoral Researcher with a dual affiliation at HMRIB and VHIO and first author of the article. And we also have the artistic perspective of filmmaker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/becarios.fundacionlacaixa.org\/en\/web\/guest\/fellows\/andrea-nouga-feliu-B006286?nav=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Andrea Nouga Feliu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, who&#8217;s currently studying for an MA in Filmmaking at the London Film School, thanks to a postgraduate fellowship abroad from \u201dla Caixa\u201d Foundation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Let\u2019s start with her.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Andrea, what cinematic references does this image bring to mind for you?<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Andrea (A)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The chromatic intensity of the image, as well as its organisation into dense patterns, <\/span><b>brings it unexpectedly close to certain contemporary Iranian visual traditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> in which colour, repetition and abstraction serve to convey meaning. The narrative arises from a nomadic carpet (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">gabbeh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">), whose colours and repetitive motifs contain stories of love, memory and desire, becoming a visual language. These cells <\/span><b>influence the presence and behaviour of certain macrophages <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">(immune system cells that eliminate pathogens and damaged cells) via a <\/span><b>molecule called CCL2 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">(a cytokine produced by the macrophages themselves, which \u2018recruits\u2019 more macrophages), which in turn can alter the tumour\u2019s progression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Marta, what else have you found out? How exactly do these senescent cells influence the tumour\u2019s progression?<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><b>Marta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">: At first, it wasn&#8217;t entirely clear whether senescent cells help to slow down cancer or, on the contrary, encourage its growth, and therefore whether it would be advisable to eliminate them (for example, by using senolytic drugs).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To answer this question, <\/span><b>we developed a transgenic mouse model so we could eliminate these cells at different stages of the disease, and we found that timing is key: if they&#8217;re eliminated too early, the tumour can become more aggressive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. However, by combining their elimination <\/span><b>with the blocking of the CCL2 molecule, this negative effect can be avoided<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In other words, it&#8217;s not just a question of whether eliminating senescent cells slows down or accelerates cancer but of how and when these cells should be eliminated. <\/span><b>In the early stages, removing senescent cells without blocking CCL2 exacerbates the attraction of macrophages<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> which, in turn, release more CCL2 and create a vicious circle of inflammation. A better understanding of the relationship between senescent cells, inflammation and the immune system is important because <\/span><b>it helps us explain why tumours develop in different ways and it opens the door to more precise therapeutic strategies in the future<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.
