But what happens when we broaden the scope of this definition and examine it from different disciplines and perspectives? And how can such health be achieved?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Beyond the obvious, health has many frontiers which are constantly being explored. The Colombian doctor H\u00e9ctor Abad G\u00f3mez, a public health specialist and human rights activist, once said that \u201cclean water saves more lives than the best of surgeons\u201d. Because, <\/span><b>if health is wellbeing, then it&#8217;s not only achieved by doctors and hospitals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">; it&#8217;s also shaped by those who design more in cities, those who research vaccines, those who ensure access to drinking water, those who farm sustainably, and those who educate to reduce inequalities. Among many others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">We spoke with researchers and fellows from our community, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/becarios.fundacionlacaixa.org\/en\/laura-ciot--B006135?nav=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Laura Ciot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaimpulse-health-innovation-call-2025-antibiotics-new-treatments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Marc Torrent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mediahub.fundacionlacaixa.org\/en\/research-health\/health\/immunology\/2025-12-02\/caixaresearch-institute-three-new-researchers-immunology-7653.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">H\u00e9ctor Huerga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/becarios.fundacionlacaixa.org\/juan-argote-cabanero-B002298?doAsUserId=iukV6768nwSy%2FAZ0DCR6wA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Juan Argote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">to explore these frontiers of health, find out what it means to them and discover the role their disciplines play in everyone\u2019s health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Maintaining balance<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Marc Torrent is a researcher in biomolecular microbiology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and he believes that health is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><b>a balance between the body and the environment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201d. Thanks to a CaixaImpulse Health Innovation grant from 2025, his aim is to <\/span><b>\u201cunderstand how pathogens interact with the human body and what mechanisms they use to cause disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201d. Traditionally, antibiotics can damage our microbiota and cause an imbalance by eliminating both harmful and beneficial bacteria. In his project, Marc tells us that \u201cit analyzes how these interactions alter the balance between the host, its defences and the microbiome\u201d in order to <\/span><b>\u201cdesign new antibiotics <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">to control infection effectively whilst <\/span><b>preserving the human microbiome, an essential component for maintaining health in the long term<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>One Health<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">For Laura Ciot, health is \u201c<\/span><b>the <\/b><b>interconnected and interdependent wellbeing of humans, animals, plants and the ecosystem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201d. She warns that <\/span><b>exploiting ecosystems and their resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> rather than preserving them and assessing our impact, means that <\/span><b>\u201cwe upset the balance and create effects that inevitably affect human health<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201d. One example of this is the agrifood sector, which, in its quest to maximise production, \u201chas caused serious consequences: soil degradation, chemical pollution and loss of biodiversity\u201d, explains Laura. The doctoral thesis she&#8217;s working on <\/span><b>analyses the effects of pesticides on bees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> with a view to mitigating, preventing and avoiding the decline these products cause in pollinators. In this way, she&#8217;s helping to build a more sustainable food system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Getting ahead of diseases<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">From H\u00e9ctor Huerga\u2019s professional perspective, health is \u201ca <\/span><b>dynamic balance of the immune system over time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201d. As a scientist, H\u00e9ctor is studying how <\/span><b>mutations that accumulate in blood stem cells affect the immune system; it is a process known as <\/b><b><i>clonal haematopoiesis<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, which has been linked to an increased risk of <\/span><b>cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, as well as cancer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. He explains that \u201cunderstanding these mechanisms enables us to identify new strategies to detect such alterations early and develop personalised treatments that help prevent or reduce their impact on public health\u201d. For this reason, since December he&#8217;s continued his research at the CaixaResearch Institute as a Junior Group Leader, <\/span><b>identifying markers that can predict which individuals will develop conditions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">associated with clonal haematopoiesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Transport as a driver of wellbeing<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201c<\/span><b>Health is the ability to live the life you choose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201d says Juan Argote, Director of Data Solutions at Aurora. From the transport sector, Juan links wellbeing with free access to different options. \u201cThis also applies to how we get around: <\/span><b>a healthy transport system is one that connects people with opportunities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">(work, education, community) through a wide range of alternatives. He explains that \u201cautomation has the potential to significantly reduce road accidents by eliminating risk factors such as fatigue or human distractions. On a large scale, this not only saves lives but also helps to create safer, more efficient cities with less strain on healthcare systems\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>And, for you, what is health?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Health can be viewed from the most intimate\u00a0 level \u2014 the body and individual health \u2014 or from a collective dimension right up to a broader perspective: the health of the planet we inhabit.
