It could be <\/span><b>an abstract doodle or the sketch of an impossible architectural design. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">However, what we&#8217;re actually seeing is the inside of a heart during a pioneering medical procedure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This snapshot captures a key moment in research that has demonstrated, for the first time, that <\/span><b>it&#8217;s possible to replace a previously implanted mechanical heart valve without the need for open-heart surgery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. A breakthrough, published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnic.es\/en\/noticias\/european-heart-journal-pioneering-technique-allows-first-human-repair-defective-mechanical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">European Heart Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, which could change the treatment of many elderly patients with valvular heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To explore this image from two complementary perspectives, the artistic and the scientific, we&#8217;re joined by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/becarios.fundacionlacaixa.org\/en\/web\/guest\/fellows\/maria-rius-ruiz-B005271?doAsUserId=J19cch66Cl%2FMuDkkBiJ%2FDA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Maria Rius<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, an architect and visual artist, and Dr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaimpulse-health-innovation-call-2024-identify-endocarditis-embolism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Alberto San Rom\u00e1n<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Hospital Universitario de Valladolid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">) and Dr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/becarios.fundacionlacaixa.org\/en\/web\/guest\/fellows\/borja-ibanez-cabeza-B001695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Borja Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (CNIC), the researchers responsible for the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>We\u2019ll start with Maria.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Maria, what works of art does this image remind you of? And what title would you give it?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>M<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">: The image reminds me of the drawings by Lina Bo Bardi, one of my favourite architects. In her work, she always integrated modern trends with insights from the popular culture of the location. However, many of these patients are now very elderly and the risk posed by surgery is too high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Our work demonstrates, for the first time, that <\/span><b>it&#8217;s possible to repair or replace this metal valve using a completely percutaneous procedure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, i.e. without the need for open-heart surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>How exactly does it work?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><strong>A and B:<\/strong> Instead of opening the chest, a catheter is inserted through the femoral artery and guided to the heart using imaging techniques.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">By means of this system, <\/span><b>the old valve can be partially detached and a new prosthesis placed inside it<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Maria, what do you think is the relationship between science and creativity?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>M: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">I&#8217;ve always felt that the two disciplines share something fundamental: curiosity. Both science and art begin by observing the world, by asking questions and exploring potential answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b><i>Architecture of a solution\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">As Maria Rius suggested, the image resembles an &#8220;olla barrejada&#8221;: a &#8220;mixed pot&#8221; of intersecting lines floating in a space that&#8217;s difficult to decipher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">However, what at first glance appears to be a chaotic drawing is, in fact, <\/span><b>an extremely precise map of the heart&#8217;s interior<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.
