Today we bring you a <\/span><b>compilation of the <\/b><b><i>\u201cNews from the Lab\u201d<\/i><\/b><b> articles published throughout 2025; a window onto the science in action that&#8217;s supported by \u201dla Caixa\u201d Foundation.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>The immune system and our skin&#8217;s resilience &#8211; what&#8217;s the connection?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The skin isn&#8217;t only the largest organ in our body but is also our first major protective barrier, defending the body from bacteria, harmful chemicals and extreme temperatures. <\/span><b>But<\/b> <b>what do its physical well-being and resilience depend on?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-meeting-health-2022-who-is-who-andres-hidalgo\"><b>Andr\u00e9s Hidalgo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Health Research researcher 20218, and \u201dla Caixa\u201d Foundation fellow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/becarios.fundacionlacaixa.org\/en\/tommaso-vicanolo--B005610?nav=true\"><b>Tommaso Vicanolo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both researchers at CNIC, have found the answer in neutrophils. Their findings indicate that this kind of immune cell is capable of modifying the resistance and permeability of the skin. Originating in the bone marrow, they play a key role in defending against microbes but <\/span><b>can switch sides when a tumour is present<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; instead of defending us, they hinder the immune response and promote the formation of blood vessels that feed the tumour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how does this switch take place? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mediahub.fundacionlacaixa.org\/en\/research-health\/health\/scientific-innovation\/2025-03-10\/conference-gabriel-rabinovich-cosmocaixa-6877.html\"><b>Gabriel Rabinovich<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Senior Group Leader at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionlacaixa.org\/es\/caixaresearch-institute\"><b>CaixaResearch Institute<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Barcelona and Senior Investigator for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conicet.gov.ar\/\"><b>CONICET<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Ada Blidner<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Researcher for <\/span><b>CONICET at the Institute of Biology and Experimental Medicine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, provide us with the answer: myeloid cells bind to a protein that&#8217;s widespread in the tumour environment, called <\/span><b><i>Galectin-1<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which alters their function and promotes tumour progression. Its standard treatment consists of administering a <\/span><b>vaccine called BCG<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> directly into the bladder to activate the immune system and slow down the disease.
