Fortunately, <\/span><b>this gap, in both resources and care, is beginning to be filled. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">People are talking more and more about the menopause, investment in research is increasing and the shelves are filling up with products (albeit with varying degrees of scientific basis) that promise to alleviate its symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <b>menopause is finally leaving the realm of taboo and moving into the spotlight, dominating scientific and social discourse and also capturing significant market share<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. So perhaps it&#8217;s time to examine how well we understand its impact on physical and mental health. And, above all, <\/span><b>the effective treatments already available and those in the pipeline.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><em><b>The figures<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;We define menopause as the disappearance of the menstrual cycle for more than 12 consecutive months, which normally occurs between the ages of 45 and 52&#8221; explains Dr. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/becarios.fundacionlacaixa.org\/ca\/becaris\/perfil?doAsUserId=4qNyxF2EvNZnVN7HIQ5dqw==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Gl\u00f2ria Borr\u00e0s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, gynaecologist and &#8220;la Caixa&#8221; Foundation fellow. &#8220;Before that, at around the age of 40, <\/span><b>perimenopause<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> sets in<\/span><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">a stage in which irregularities in the ovarian cycle and the first symptoms appear&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;When the menopause arrives depends on each woman&#8217;s<\/span><b> ovarian reserve<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">; in other words, the quantity and quality of her ovaries&#8221; adds Dr. Borr\u00e0s. When this reserve is depleted, oestrogen and progesterone hormone levels plummet, and that&#8217;s when some of the <\/span><b>more than 40 symptoms associated with the menopause <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">begin to manifest themselves<\/span><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The figures are staggering<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aeem.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Spanish Association for the Study of Menopause<\/b><\/a><b> (AEEM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">), more than 90% of women suffer from one or more symptoms and for 25% to 50% these symptoms are severe. 80% experience neurological alterations such as insomnia and hot flushes, caused by the brain attempting to regulate the body temperature. More than 50% report signs of depression and around 60% mention brain fog and memory lapses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Such figures point to situations that <\/span><b>&#8220;affect not only health but also work, personal relationships and quality of life&#8221; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">says Dr. Borr\u00e0s. And it&#8217;s precisely this impact, both individual and collective, that has placed menopause centre stage. But why now?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><em><b>A social and economic phenomenon<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><b>Demographic pressure has been a key factor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">As pointed out by the WHO, society is ageing and, in 2025, there are over<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infobae.com\/salud\/2023\/10\/18\/para-el-ano-2025-la-menopausia-alcanzara-a-mas-de-mil-millones-de-personas-en-todo-el-mundo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> 1 billion women going through the menopause around the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, equivalent to 12% of the global population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Another reason is <\/span><b>the loss of labour productivity caused by its symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, estimated at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/miradordeatarfe.es\/?p=70103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">more than $150 billion (\u20ac139.557 billion) worldwide, according to the consulting firm Frost &amp; Sullivan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">And, finally, <\/span><b>there&#8217;s the emergence of the so-called &#8220;menopause gold rush<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Companies have now identified a niche market (valued at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/femalefoundersfund.com\/press\/menopause-is-a-600-billion-opportunity-report-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">$600 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> annually) where, for decades, there used to be a lack of knowledge, research and sex education, resulting in an avalanche of products of <\/span><b>dubious effectiveness <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">or with prices disproportionate to the benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The first critics, however, have already appeared. In March 2024, an article was published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/series-do\/menopause-series-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The Lancet<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> warning of the risks of excessively medicalising this lifestage and calling for a paradigm shift: <\/span><b>more information for women, more shared decisions and more support for across-the-board care.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In Spain, the first steps are already being taken. In February, the Congress of Deputies approved, for the first time,\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congreso.es\/es\/notas-de-prensa?_notasprensa_mvcPath=detalle&amp;_notasprensa_notaId=48113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">a package of measures specifically<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> aimed at the menopause, designed precisely to achieve these three goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><em><b>Are there any alternative treatments?\u00a0<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;We have a large number of supplements and treatments that can be tailored to each woman according to her needs and preferences&#8221; replies Dr. Gl\u00f2ria Borr\u00e0s. &#8220;The first step is usually to work <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on<\/span><b> lifestyle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">: diet, physical exercise and stress management. These factors directly influence the microbiota, which we now know plays a key role in intestinal, vaginal and even brain health&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;After that, there are <\/span><b>nutritional supplements <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">some of which do have a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">scientific<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> basis)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">and <\/span><b>non-hormonal pharmacological treatments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> which are particularly useful for women with contraindications, such as cancer survivors. And, finally, there&#8217;s <\/span><b>hormone replacement therapy (HRT)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, based on the administration of synthetic oestrogens that offset the hormonal decline&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The case of HRT is paradoxical. For years it was the standard option until <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/salud-y-bienestar\/2022-11-23\/los-limites-de-la-terapia-hormonal-de-la-menopausia-no-se-recomienda-para-prevenir-enfermedades-pero-si-para-tratar-sofocos-severos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">a study by the Women&#8217;s Health Initiative (WHI, 2002)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> linked it to an increased risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular problems. The impact was immediate: the use of HRT plummeted. However, the authors themselves later acknowledged that the data had been misinterpreted and today <\/span><b>HRT is once again supported by an international consensus of medical societies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Even so, in Spain it&#8217;s only used by 4% of women with menopausal symptoms and barely 2.3% in the perimenopause, far from the figure of 20% reached in 2000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Meanwhile, research is advancing towards new avenues that offer <\/span><b>specific therapies for specific symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. This is the case of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaimpulse-health-innovation-call-2024-effective-treatment-osteoporosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Joan Roig<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, a &#8220;la Caixa&#8221; Foundation researcher who&#8217;s studying the potential of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><b> Klotho hormone as a treatment for osteoporosis. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;This protein, known as an<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> anti-ageing molecule, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">protects us against oxidative, inflammatory and senescent damage&#8221; explains Roig, adding &#8220;in the lab we&#8217;ve seen how higher levels in mice can protect them against age-related osteoporosis&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11522\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11522\" class=\"wp-image-11522\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Menopausia11-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Menopausia11-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Menopausia11-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Menopausia11-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Menopausia11-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Menopausia11-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Joan Roig<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Now his research team, part of the joint research unit set up by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Vall d&#8217;Hebron Research Institute (VHIR), wants to see if the same results can be obtained with menopause-related osteoporosis. If confirmed, this would pave the way for a new drug with great potential, capable <\/span><b>not only of slowing down the disease but also of stimulating bone regeneration.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Finally, beyond traditional treatments, some experts are proposing an even more disruptive alternative: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/life\/410612\/menopause-women-aging-rapamycin-ovaries-estrogen-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">delaying or even eliminating the menopause<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">to avoid its most severe symptoms. This is certainly a controversial proposal but it is certainly stimulating debate regarding\u00a0 <\/span><b>the extent to which caring for ourselves in old age is synonymous with concealing or even eradicating it.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><em><b>A new chapter<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;Like so many other aspects of women&#8217;s health, for centuries the menopause has been stifled, stigmatised and even associated with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">hysteria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8221; notes Dr. Borr\u00e0s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;But we&#8217;re talking about a lifestage in which <\/span><b>women accumulate experience, talent and wisdom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, and when they can remain fully active in their social, family and working lives. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s essential for science and society to reach out to them by offering support, information and appropriate treatments, rather than assuming their decline and marginalising women after the age of 55&#8243; says Dr. Borr\u00e0s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">At the same time, the expert stresses how important it is for women to <\/span><b>&#8220;avoid self-treatment.
