On the 2nd and 3rd of\u00a0 October, science and nature came together to welcome nearly 50 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/es\/health-research-meeting-2025-who-is-who\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">researchers from the 2021 Health Research call<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> at the Cap Roig Gardens. It was two days filled with networking, presentations and open discussions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This time, the event was moderated by the writer and science communicator Vivienne Parry, and featured contributions from representatives of the Fundaci\u00f3n Luz\u00f3n and the Funda\u00e7\u00e3o para a Ci\u00eancia e a Tecnologia (FCT), strategic partners of the Health Research grants. All of it came together under a single purpose: <\/span><b>to explore the major current and future challenges of biomedical research and health innovation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qyUmov5WX-M?si=7t3jYWj5dysLHR2-\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>A space to grow<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cCap Roig is a unique place,\u201d said \u00c0ngel Font, Assistant General Manager of Research and Fellowships at the \u201dla Caixa\u201d Foundation, during the event\u2019s opening. And indeed it is: this 20-hectare garden between Palafrugell and Mont-ras is home to more than 800 botanical species from around the world, creating <\/span><b>an exceptional Mediterranean ecosystem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201cThat\u2019s precisely the reason for gathering here,\u201d Font continued. \u201cThe richness and uniqueness of this space reflect our commitment to growth and invite us, once again, to <\/span><b>share, reflect and create knowledge together<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">And so, the first day began in the gardens of Cap Roig. Researchers shared <\/span><b>their first impressions, expectations and projects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> in this inspiring setting, and for many it was the first time they met face to face. Across two consecutive sessions, eight researchers explained how their projects are tackling these challenges from two different perspectives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The first part of the scientific sessions focused on the use of <\/span><b>hidden \u201ccodes\u201d within our cells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> \u2013 from DNA markers to cellular behaviour patterns \u2013 as unique \u201cfingerprints\u201d capable of revealing diseases and serving as tools for early diagnosis and prevention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cajal.csic.es\/en\/neural-circuits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Liset Men\u00e9ndez de la Prida<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (Spanish National Research Council, CSIC, Madrid) opened the session with an example from neurobiology. She explained that hippocampal neurons <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> the region of the brain responsible for forming memories \u2013 are activated in highly precise sequences, as if composing a true \u201c<\/span><b>memory code<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201d. Her aim, she added, is \u201cto identify potential disruptions in these patterns that could serve as markers for the early diagnosis of neurological diseases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hybrid.i3s.up.pt\/team\/jose-bessa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Jos\u00e9 Bessa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (Instituto de Investiga\u00e7\u00e3o e Inova\u00e7\u00e3o em Sa\u00fade da Universidade do Porto, i3S, Porto) turned to the field of metabolic diseases to highlight the potential of \u201cmarks\u201d in the <\/span><b>non-coding DNA of pancreatic cells as possible early indicators of type 2 diabetes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. His team is working to identify these markers with the aim of developing more personalised and effective treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maf-tb.i3s.up.pt\/?page_id=210\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Margarida Saraiva<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (i3S)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">focused her presentation on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>role of genetics \u2013 both of the patient and the pathogen \u2013 in the variability of immune responses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> to tuberculosis infection. \u201cDecoding these genetic \u2018signatures\u2019 could pave the way for new strategies for tackling the disease,\u201d Margarida explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To close the session, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-health-call-2021-project-drug-resistance-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Helder Maiato<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (i3S) presented his research on the \u201c<\/span><b>tubulin code<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">\u201d, a marker found in the cell\u2019s cytoskeleton that could help predict drug responses and thereby reduce side effects in breast cancer patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The session distilled a clear takeaway: decoding <\/span><b>the genetic and molecular signatures of each disease is a decisive step towards precision medicine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. One of the speakers, Margarida Saraiva, summed it up as follows (more details in this thread on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CaixaResearch\/status\/1974016286116942093\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">X<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/caixaresearch.bsky.social\/post\/3m2blikq6lk2q\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Bluesky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-bzKffFC8_M?si=8RBH5t5XjGoOrVaL\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The second part of the session focused on <\/span><b>targeted therapies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, designed to <\/span><b>deliver treatments precisely where and when they are needed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. It showed that these strategies are no longer just theoretical: they already exist and offer significant benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaimpulse-health-innovation-call-2024-drugs-chronic-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Amadeu Llebaria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia, IQAC-CSIC, Barcelona) presented the case of <\/span><b>light-activated drugs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. \u201cThis technology <\/span><b>reduces heart damage after a heart attack<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, as it allows the treatment to be activated in the right tissue and at the right time for each patient,\u201d he explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">For his part, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-health-call-2021-project-nanorrobots-bladder-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Samuel S\u00e1nchez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia, IBEC, Barcelona) presented another equally groundbreaking approach: <\/span><b>self-propelled nanobots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> capable of navigating through the bladder and delivering drugs directly to tumours. Their success is already remarkable: <\/span><b>by reducing dosage and toxicity, they improve tumour regression in preclinical models<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-health-call-2021-project-breast-cancer-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Miguel Castanho<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (Gulbenkian Institute of Molecular Medicine, GIMM, Lisbon)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">addressed one of today\u2019s major challenges: brain metastasis in triple-negative breast cancer. \u201cWe\u2019re exploring the use of <\/span><b>immunotherapy targeted at specific receptors in the blood\u2013brain barrier<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, which could enhance the therapy\u2019s effect and improve outcomes for this difficult-to-treat disease,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Finally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-health-call-2021-project-als-therapies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Ana Mart\u00ednez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (CSIC) presented <\/span><b>personalised therapeutic models for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (ALS). This is a patient-centred molecular approach that enables drugs to be tested more safely and effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">They all agreed on one key point: targeted therapies are paving the way for <\/span><b>a new generation of medicines: safer, more effective, and better tailored to individual patients<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Josep Tabernero, Chair of the centre\u2019s Scientific Committee, summed it up as follows: \u201cImmunology is the common thread that connects everything from cancer to neurodegeneration, including infectious and metabolic diseases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The institute aims to attract international talent and integrate cutting-edge technologies and computational platforms. That is why \u201cit\u2019s essential to <\/span><b>evaluate research in a multidimensional way, capturing interactions and connections that go beyond simply counting publications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Can artificial intelligence help in this process? The discussion made it clear that while AI can ease administrative burdens and overcome language barriers, <\/span><b>human judgement remains crucial for assessing creativity and scientific originality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">As an example of these new practices, Ismael highlighted <\/span><b>the commitment of the \u201dla Caixa\u201d Foundation and the CaixaResearch Institute to the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, which brings together more than 700 organisations dedicated to fairer and more responsible evaluation models. This initiative reflects a shared commitment: to move towards assessment systems that recognise the quality, impact and social relevance of research beyond numbers and traditional metrics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Want to know more?
