Days later, you have a high temperature, feelings of nausea and your joints are incredibly painful. At the doctor&#8217;s, you receive a disturbing diagnosis: dengue fever. &#8220;But isn&#8217;t that an exotic disease?&#8221; you wonder. The answer is obvious: not anymore.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Although it may sound like the beginning of a dystopian novel, this could actually happen where you live. In Spain, for instance, there have been reports of some indigenous cases of <\/span><b>tropical diseases that, until recently, had never set foot on European soil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. However, what&#8217;s most worrying is that these aren&#8217;t isolated incidents but signs of a far-reaching change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;Some of these diseases used to occur sporadically, such as West Nile virus, but now they&#8217;re endemic. Added to this are <\/span><b>climate change and international travel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">which help to spread pathogens and insect vectors, such as mosquitoes and ticks&#8221; explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaimpulse-health-innovation-call-2024-surveillance-platform-emerging-diseases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Jose Mu\u00f1oz, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">head of the International Health Service at Hospital Cl\u00ednic and a researcher at ISGlobal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;To prevent their spread, it&#8217;s not enough to know where the pathogens are but also which vectors inhabit each area and how they interact with animals and humans. <\/span><b>If we reduce the vector, we reduce the chances of infection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8221; adds Aitana Oltra, a &#8220;la Caixa&#8221; Foundation fellow and specialist in science management at CEAB-CSIC, as well as co-founder of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mosquitoalert.com\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Mosquito Alert <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">project, with support from CaixaResearch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">In countries where these diseases are endemic, there are control programmes tailored to each case, such as impregnated nets for the mosquito that transmits malaria. In Europe, on the other hand, the strategy consists of <\/span><b>preventing such diseases from establishing themselves and starting transmission cycles.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Jos\u00e9 Mu\u00f1oz&#8217;s team is developing a surveillance model called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.fambaproject.com\/\"><b>FAMBA<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> based on international travel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. &#8220;It&#8217;s a remote medical system for travellers that collects real-time health data, analysing this information with artificial intelligence to detect emerging diseases at an early stage&#8221; he explains. &#8220;Our goal is to perform a proof of concept at a European level to demonstrate its effectiveness&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10746 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagenes-adaptadas-jose-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagenes-adaptadas-jose-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagenes-adaptadas-jose-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagenes-adaptadas-jose-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagenes-adaptadas-jose-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagenes-adaptadas-jose-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Imagenes-adaptadas-jose-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Jose Mu\u00f1oz, head of the International Health Service at Hospital Cl\u00ednic and a researcher at ISGlobal.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The research carried out by Jordi Figuerola, on the other hand, <\/span><b>focuses on West Nile virus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, whose incidence continues to rise in Spain, with 158 cases and 20 deaths in 2024. &#8220;Our aim is to<\/span><b> produce predictive models for the number of mosquitoes and risk of virus transmission to improve control.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> Thanks to our work, we&#8217;ve discovered new vector species and detected the circulation of the virus a month before the first human cases appeared&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Citizen involvement also plays a key role <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">in monitoring viruses and vectors, as demonstrated by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mosquitoalert.com\/en\/\"><b>Mosquito Alert<\/b> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">app. &#8220;Thanks to the participation of society and new technologies, the platform <\/span><b>can collect data and photos on mosquito vectors in Europe almost in real-time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, even detecting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanidad.gob.es\/gabinete\/notasPrensa.do?id=6704\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">new species in places where they were previously unknown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. This information enables control protocols to be activated quickly&#8221; notes Aitana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Citizen involvement has greatly enriched data collection and has speeded up vector detection in large areas, overcoming the limitations of traditional methods. It&#8217;s also a good idea to cover windows with mosquito nets and, in areas where this insect is abundant, wear long sleeves and repellents&#8221; says Jordi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">&#8220;The most important thing is to<\/span><b> follow the instructions issued by the public health authorities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. In summer, for example, there&#8217;s a higher density of tiger mosquitoes and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elespanol.com\/ciencia\/salud\/20250612\/dengue-dispara-espana-numero-casos-duplica-solo-ano-transmision-autoctona-marca-records\/1003743800334_0.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">more cases of dengue fever<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">are diagnosed in our country&#8221; warns Jos\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The map of infectious diseases is constantly evolving <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">but experts are clear on one thing: science, prevention and the active involvement of society are key.
