But in recent times, scientific breakthroughs have been painting a different picture: for the first time, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.labiotech.eu\/best-biotech\/als-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">innovative therapies, specialised start-ups and initiatives are emerging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that offer hopeful results which could truly transform the future of ALS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This collective drive comes not only from large firms and pharmaceutical companies. It&#8217;s also taking shape in universities, hospitals and research centres around the world, where researchers, doctors and experts are working day after day with the same goal: to understand ALS and come closer to finding a cure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Global ALS Awareness Day, we give voice to some of the people who, from the CaixaResearch community, are carrying out research to make this change possible and who can all state the same message: &#8220;<\/span><b>I&#8217;m also working to cure ALS<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><i>Understanding and diagnosing ALS<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. It affects the neurons responsible for voluntary muscle activity, essential for functions such as walking and talking, and it <\/span><b>eventually leads to paralysis <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and death. It&#8217;s estimated that 2 out of every 100,000 people worldwide are affected by ALS. In Spain, although there&#8217;s no official register, between 4,000 and 4,500 people suffer from ALS and, every year, 700 people develop the first symptoms of the disease, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sen.es\/saladeprensa\/pdf\/Link378.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Spanish Neurological Society <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(SEN). For all of them, the average life expectancy after diagnosis is five years, <\/span><b>a terrible psychological blow <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the patient and those close to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Being diagnosed with ALS is a life-changing shock that&#8217;s difficult to describe. It&#8217;s a catastrophe. It&#8217;s the sword of Damocles hanging over you. It&#8217;s a death warrant. We often don&#8217;t know what causes it and there are many different mutations involved. This makes it a huge challenge that needs urgent answers&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s why she forms part of the group led by Fern\u00e1ndez-Capetillo, which is working to understand the molecular causes that initiate the death of motor neurons in ALS patients. &#8220;Understanding the problem is the first step in trying to find solutions. Our initial findings suggest that ALS-associated mutations lead to the accumulation of defective ribosomal proteins, <\/span><b>a kind of &#8216;molecular junk&#8217; that causes toxicity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This phenomenon is also observed during ageing&#8221; says the CaixaResearch researcher. &#8220;In this context, we are working to find ways to clear these ribosomal protein aggregates, in order to explore their potential as a new therapeutic approach for ALS&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10518\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10518\" class=\"wp-image-10518\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog-2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog-2-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog-2-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Anabel S\u00e1ez and Fern\u00e1ndez-Capetillo<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Fern\u00e1ndez-Capetillo and S\u00e1ez Mas, CaixaResearch researcher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-health-call-projects-2024-treatment-als\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Benedetta Bolognesi<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), is working to understand some of the causes of this disease. &#8220;We&#8217;re focusing on the SOD1 protein, which harbours more than 180 mutations associated with the disease&#8221; she explains. Her research forms part of a large-scale project with the University of Wollongong and the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia to <\/span><b>map the impact of all genetic changes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in SOD1 on the different mechanisms that cause ALS. &#8220;This will enable <\/span><b>earlier and more accurate diagnosis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and will also lay the groundwork for more targeted and effective treatments for all ALS patients&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10530\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10530\" class=\"wp-image-10530\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog10-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog10-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog10-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog10-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog10-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.caixaresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/DM-Ela-Blog10-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Benedetta Bolognesi<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The search for biomarkers, biological molecules found in our bodies that can signal the presence of the disease, is one of the most important areas of action against ALS. Finding them may lead to <\/span><b>the development of faster and less invasive diagnostic tests<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which could improve the prognosis of the disease. &#8220;I think we&#8217;ve reached a watershed in terms of ALS research. We&#8217;ve managed to put the disease on the public and social agenda and make it attractive to researchers&#8221; says Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Arregui, President of the Luz\u00f3n Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the projects along these lines, which forms part of the collaboration between &#8220;la Caixa&#8221; Foundation and the Luz\u00f3n Foundation, is that of <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-health-call-2020-project-als\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maite Mendioroz<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Ivonne Jeric\u00f3, researchers at the Miguel Servet Foundation (Navarrabiomed). Her team is working on <\/span><b>a diagnostic technique developed in the field of oncology that could be applied to ALS patients<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: liquid biopsy. &#8220;When cells degenerate and die, they release their contents, including DNA, into the bloodstream. The team led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/caixaresearch.org\/en\/caixaresearch-health-call-2021-project-als-therapies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ana Mart\u00ednez<\/strong> <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the Margarita Salas Centre for Biological Research is focusing on <\/span><b>discovering and developing drug candidates <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with innovative mechanisms of action. &#8220;We&#8217;re working to modulate TDP-43, a protein in the cell nucleus that has a multitude of functions in the formation of other proteins. And it&#8217;s no coincidence: <\/span><b>the disease has stopped being an overlooked mystery and is now a priority in biomedical research<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
