This edition brought together the <\/span><b>project leaders and principal investigators<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> from the 25 projects selected in the <\/span><b>2019 CaixaResearch Health Call<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">During the two-day gathering, especially designed to promote scientific exchange and create new opportunities for collaboration, participants had the opportunity to engage in multidisciplinary discussions and gain insights from other projects. However, the underlying biology of many diseases remains an enigma and eludes conventional therapies. What strategies are research institutions following to stimulate innovation and knowledge transfer? They examined different strategies to promote innovation and facilitate technology transfer at research institutions. \u201cWe\u2019ve learned three important lessons: First, <\/span><b>there\u2019s no distinction between basic science or applied science; there\u2019s science of excellence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Second, <\/span><b>there must be institutional support to technology transfer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">; <\/span><b>it cannot rest solely on the researcher\u2019s shoulders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">. Competent professionals and adequate funding are essential. And last but not least, <\/span><b>publishing in a high-impact journal and creating a start-up should both have the same importance when evaluating research projects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.
