Qu\u00e8 produeix?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c9s una malaltia gen\u00e8tica complexa que provoca malformacions a totes les mucoses de l\u2019\u00e9sser hum\u00e0. Afecta b\u00e0sicament la respiraci\u00f3, ja que causa moltes infeccions bacterianes recurrents als pulmons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I arribant a provocar la mort\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>S\u00ed. Jo estudio aquestes infeccions bacterianes des del 96, quan vaig comen\u00e7ar el doctorat. Sempre em va interessar resoldre aquest gran problema.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I ara dirigeixes un equip de recerca a l\u2019IBEC que est\u00e0 especialitzat en la soca bacteriana Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Per qu\u00e8 \u00e9s tan perillosa aquesta soca?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perqu\u00e8 ho resisteix tot, tant els antibi\u00f2tics com el nostre propi sistema immune, dissenyat per atacar les infeccions bacterianes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Per qu\u00e8 aquests bacteris que causen la fibrosi qu\u00edstica s\u00f3n m\u00e9s resistents que els altres?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perqu\u00e8 creixen en forma de biofilm (o biopel\u00b7l\u00edcula): una estructura o \u201cmoc\u201d molt gruixuda formada per sucres, ADN i prote\u00efnes que formen els mateixos bacteris i que els fa impermeables a tot el que els vulgui combatre. Aix\u00ed, els antibi\u00f2tics no els poden penetrar. Aquesta mena de bacteris ultraresistents existeixen en totes les malalties infeccioses cr\u00f2niques, com ferides cr\u00f2niques, el peu diab\u00e8tic, els cat\u00e8ters infectats\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aquests bacteris \u201cGoliat\u201d ja representen m\u00e9s del 60% de bacteris humans que tracten els metges. S\u2019estan creant nous f\u00e0rmacs que els destrueixin?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>S\u00ed, estem dissenyant ter\u00e0pies alternatives a les actuals, capaces d\u2019atacar aquest biofilm. Fem servir nanopart\u00edcules de les quals hem modificat la superf\u00edcie perqu\u00e8 el disgreguin i, aix\u00ed, l\u2019antibi\u00f2tic pugui penetrar i matar el bacteri que creix dins del moc, cosa que curaria radicalment les infeccions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Est\u00e0 gaire avan\u00e7at aquest tractament?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>De moment, les nanopart\u00edcules que hem dissenyat estan funcionant molt b\u00e9 in vitro, i ara estem provant si funcionen en models animals i poden ser escalables a \u00fas terap\u00e8utic en malalts de fibrosi qu\u00edstica.<\/p>\n<p><strong>En qu\u00e8 us ha ajudat que el projecte BiofilmChip fos seleccionat per CaixaImpulse?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CaixaImpulse, de la Fundaci\u00f3 \u201dla Caixa\u201d, ens ha ajudat a desenvolupar un sistema en qu\u00e8 nosaltres podem detectar els biofilms en pacients de fibrosi qu\u00edstica, i trobar una ter\u00e0pia que pugui millorar-ne el tractament de manera m\u00e9s primerenca. Ara mateix ja estem buscant empreses per llicenciar aquestes tecnologies, hem desenvolupat un prototip perqu\u00e8 es faci servir als laboratoris de microbiologia cl\u00ednica i el pas seg\u00fcent ser\u00e0 la comercialitzaci\u00f3 i la sortida al mercat, per a la qual cosa ja estem en contacte amb alguna empresa de desenvolupament de tecnologies m\u00e8diques. Al final, CaixaImpulse ha perm\u00e8s que el que fem al laboratori pugui sortir-ne i ser utilitzat a la vida real.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sembla que falta poc\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A finals de l\u2019any que ve haur\u00edem de saber-ne alguna cosa. Per\u00f2 dep\u00e8n de l\u2019inter\u00e8s que hi hagi per finan\u00e7ar-ho per part de les ind\u00fastries de diagn\u00f2stic i farmac\u00e8utiques\u2026 L\u2019exemple \u00e9s la COVID-19: hem vist que \u00e9s possible treure una vacuna en un any!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Despr\u00e9s de tants anys en la recerca, diries que s\u2019ha avan\u00e7at gaire en la cura de la fibrosi qu\u00edstica?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>S\u2019ha avan\u00e7at for\u00e7a pel que fa a s\u00edmptomes i una mica en gen\u00e8tica, per\u00f2 no en el tractament de les infeccions bacterianes. Avui dia els pacients es moren d\u2019aix\u00f2. Es podrien trobar m\u00e9s tractaments, per\u00f2 no s\u2019investiga tant com per a altres malalties perqu\u00e8 \u00e9s una malaltia rara. D\u2019aqu\u00ed ve la import\u00e0ncia del finan\u00e7ament.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Per\u00f2 creus que un dia podrem curar totalment la fibrosi qu\u00edstica?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jo crec que s\u00ed. Avan\u00e7ant en gen\u00e8tica per poder solucionar el defecte de la mutaci\u00f3 que provoca la malaltia i, alhora, mitigant tamb\u00e9 els problemes associats, com ara infeccions, absorcions intestinals, problemes a les mucoses, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qu\u00e8 \u00e9s el millor de ser investigador?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Haver complert un somni d\u2019adolescent.
